Vista

A muslim society

90% of the population here is Muslim. So most of the women dress all covered. Some of them just have a small window for their eyes between all those clothes. Some men use the typical hat and some wear a kind of with dress. There are a lot of mosques and of course they pray a several times a day with microphones so you can not miss the praying at 5:30 am...

Mazizini Beach

Our view from the balcony at low tide.

The fisherman village.

The Gests House is in place called Mazizini, just above a beach where there is a fisherman village. It is a very nice beach, but you can just swim there at high tide. A lot of people work out there, running, swimming and doing all kind of exercise, most of them because football soccer is its passion. We go down there often and I think they are getting used to it. There are just local people in this beach and you hardly see a woman or girl down there, so I swim with long shorts and T-shirt... because even normally dressed we are an attraction for locals, especially for the kids that approach to use saying ‘Jambo–Jambo´ that means Hello-Hello. We don’t know if we are so interested to them because of our color, or because we go around holding hands…

The Guest House...

The Gests House is a two-floor building, in the upper part there is 3 big rooms, we are in one of them that has 3 small beds with mosquito nets. National researchers or students that come to IMS occupy the other 2 rooms. The bathroom is outside and is share by we 4. In the 1st floor there is a big living room and the kitchen, as the house is really old some pipes doesn’t work and there is no running water in the kitchen.

Electricity in the Gests House can be absent at some points of the day, at random hours, the worst of it is that the stove works with electricity so at that times we can not cook. At the beginning running water could also be absent at some points… now we have 3 weeks without it, they seem to be fixing the main pipe at the street… so we have to carry water in buckets form a faucet in the street… but normally Asha and Aji do this for us…

Zanzibar!

Flying over the Zanzibar channel was an experience… the blue sky, the torques water and small islands all over it…
